National Talent Search Scheme is a flagship activity of the NCERT started in the year 1963. The purpose of the scheme was to identify talented students and nurture their talent. Talent refers to the potentiality that manifests itself in a high level of performance in one or more specialized areas.

The scheme, therefore, covers areas like Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law. It honours and helps talented students by providing financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship. For the courses in Basic Sciences, Social Sciences and Commerce, this assistance is provided up to Ph.D. level. For professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law this assistance is given only up to Post Graduation.

From the selection year 2010, the NCERT will conduct the National Talent Search Examination for students studying in Class VIII only.

1. Scholarships: On the basis of the examination conducted, 1000 scholarships will be awarded for each group of students appearing for Class VIII examinations. The amount of scholarship will be Rs.500/- per month as per NTS rules.

2. Reservation: 15% scholarships will be reserved for students belonging to the SC category, 7.5% scholarships for students belonging to the ST category and 3% for Physically Challenged Group of Students each in respect of the class VIII.

3. Selection: There will be two-stage selection process for award of scholarship. For Stage-I, selection will be done by States/UTs through a written examination. Students who qualify Stage I will be eligible to appear for Stage II examination conducted by NCERT.

4. The States/UTs will also conduct the selection test for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme along with the Stage-I written examination for NTS.

6. Eligibility: Students of Class VIII studying in recognized schools are eligible to appear for the respective Class VIII Stage I examination conducted by the States/UTs in which the schools are located. There will be no domicile restriction.

7. Examination: The pattern of written examination for Class VIII will be as follows:
• Stage I examination at the State/UT level will comprise two parts, namely (a) Mental Ability Test (MAT) and (b) Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) covering social sciences, sciences and mathematics.
• Stage II examination at the National level will comprise (a) Mental Ability Test (MAT), (b) Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) covering social sciences, sciences and mathematics, (c) Interview. Only those candidates who qualify the written examination at the National Level will be invited for interview.

8. State Quotas: Each State/Union Territory has been allotted a quota to recommend a specific number of candidates for the Stage II examination, the details of which will be made available on NCERT website. However, there will be no State/Union Territory Quota for the final award of scholarship after the Stage II examination. Reservation for SC, ST and physically challenged will be as notified in para 2 above.

9. Application Form: You may contact the State/UT Liaison officer for procuring application form. However, application form can be downloaded from NCERT website <http://www.ncert.nic.in> also. All correspondence relating to application forms should be addressed to the State Liaison Officers (LOs) whose addresses are given at the end/Website.

10. The completed application form duly signed by Principal of the school should be submitted to the LO/ concerned district official of the State before the last date.

11. Fees: States and Union Territories may notify the fee required (refer NCERT website) which will be paid for the Stage-I examination. However, NCERT does not charge any fee for the Stage-II examination.

12. Announcement of Results: Results of the Stage-I examination will be announced by the respective State Governments/ Union Territories. Results of Stage-II examination will be announced by NCERT.

13. Indian Students Studying Abroad can appear directly for Stage II NTS Examination under conditions prescribed in the NTS brochure for class VIII which is available on the NCERT website. Candidates may fill up relevant items of the Application Form available on the NCERT website and send to the undersigned along with a photocopy of the mark sheet of previous examination latest by March 15, 2010.

Your attention is drawn to the Board’s Office Circular No. 14/08 dated 15^th April 2008, conveying Board’s decision to introduce Practical Project Work in Sociology for classes XI and XII from the academic session 2008-09 of class XI and the class XII Board examination 2010.

Accordingly the revised design of the Board’s theory Question paper of 80 marks will be as follows-

It may kindly be noted that the passage for the passage based question may not be necessarily taken from the NCERT textbook. The paragraph may also be taken from any magazine/newspaper but it will be essentially based on the theme/content prescribed in the Board’s syllabus.

Further, the passage-based question will be an open ended question having no fixed answer. The students well aware of the theme and the context can attempt such questions based on their logical reasoning.

The revised Question papers in Sociology, Class XII for the 2010 Board Examination have been posted on the Board’s website www.cbse.nic.in .

CBSE/SCHOLARSHIP/CSS/2009 15-07-2009

Subject: Inviting applications for “CENTRAL SECTOR SCHEME OF SCHOLARSHIP FOR COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS 2009”

The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Higher Education , Government of India has introduced a scholarship scheme from the year 2008 titled “Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students” with the objective to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from low-income families to meet day-to-day expenses while pursuing higher studies.

The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of the results of All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE), (Class XII) 2009.

The total number of scholarships will be divided amongst the State Boards based on the State’s population in the age group of 18-25 years, after segregating share of CBSE and ICSE on the basis of number of students passing out from various Boards in the country. The number of scholarships allotted to a Board would be distributed amongst pass outs of the Science, Commerce and Humanities streams of the Board in the ratio of 3:2:1.

The scholarships will be given @ Rs.1000/- per month at Graduation level for first three years of College and University courses and Rs.2000/- per month at Post Graduation level. Students pursuing professional courses would get Rs2000/- per month in the 4^th & 5^th year. The scholarships would be paid for 10 months in an academic year.

Eligibility conditions for award of scholarship are as follows:

• The scholarship shall be awarded to the Indian Nationals only.
• The student should have scored a minimum of 80% of marks in the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE), 2009 conducted by the CBSE.
• The Undergraduate /Professional /Degree courses are pursued as regular courses, (not correspondence or distance mode) in recognised educational institutions in India and not availing of any other scholarship scheme. The scheme is applicable to all categories of students both ‘general’ and ‘reserved’.
• The student should belong to non-creamy layer. Income ceiling for ‘non –creamy layer’ is 4.5 Lakhs per annum.
• The reservation of various categories are: SC 15% , ST 7.5%, OBC 27% and horizontally 3% for Physically Handicapped.

CBSE-HERTIAGE INDIA QUIZ 2009

The first round of the CBSE Heritage India Quiz-2009 will be a written test which will be conducted on Saturday, the 29^th August, 2009 between 10.30 a.m. and 12.00 noon.

The schools which have registered for the quiz are requested to sponsor 3 students from classes IX to XII to participate in the written quiz.

The communication related to the roll nos. of candidates and centres allotted are being sent separately. This information will also be made available on the CBSE website shortly.

The participating schools may note the following:-

· The candidates should report not later than 1000 hrs. at the venue on the day of the written quiz.

· The test will be a multiple choice type to be answered on an OMR sheet.

· Instructions regarding filling of roll numbers names, address etc. will be given at the examination centre.

· Candidates should affix their signatures in the space provided for this purpose on the first page of the OMR answer sheet.

· It may be ensured that each participant carries:

§ Bonafide Certificates with attested photographs of students from the Principal of the school.

§ The letter of allotment of the Roll No. to the candidate by the Principal duly signed.

· Diagnostic, planning, organizational and management skills and techniques

· An understanding of the ways in which children learn and the ability to select the best teaching practices for each student

· The ability to accurately evaluate student learning

· Knowledge of parental involvement strategies and ways to deal with culturally diverse populations

There is no set answer to a perfect test score, but there are many strategies which will improve your study habits and test taking skills. By using some of the tips below you will find that you are more prepared for your exam. If you are in a classroom or if you are home taught, you must understand the expectations required to pass. Here are some tips on how to prepare your study guide and yourself. Good luck.

In Class

1. Ask the teacher to give you an example of how the term, idea, or presentation would be worded as a test question. This will help you put the concept into a test perspective.

2. Establish what type of test you will be given at the end of the assignment. This will help you outline your study habits to produce the proper response required by the teacher. Ask if there are any study groups you can attend before the exam. Many teachers will offer study groups in the exact format of the exam.

At Home:

3. Establish a place you can study without interruption. When you are ready to study, give yourself a certain amount of time to outline and process the information.

4. When studying, create a story using the information to be tested. Make all the parts of the test come to life. For example; Give an oral presentation about the topic aloud to your family so they can understand it. Discuss the topic at the dinner table asking for opinions. By creating a story your information has a meaning and a purpose.

5. Flash cards will help aid memory. There are numerous ways a flash card can be made. For example; color coded by topic, vocabulary word on one side-definition on the other, pictures, acronyms, etc.. You can play memory games, jeopardy, quick response activities with a friend. 80% of all adults surveyed said they benefited most by the use of flash cards.

6. Create your study guide based on the format of the test. For example; there are 25 questions with short answer replies. Most likely these will be based around the vocabulary you have studied. Design a game like jeopardy where you take the word and come up with questions which may be asked. If there are essay questions think of the main idea and how you would present it to a group of friends.

7. When reading, cross out irrelevant information. Highlight important information.

8. When taking an exam work on all the questions you are sure of first. Skip the others, then go back and answer what you have left by process of elimination. 90% of the missing answers will be located in the context of your correct answers.

9. When reading a paragraph focus on the main topic of the paragraph. See how the sentences fit together as you continue to read. Find what the author is saying to you and skip irrelevant details.

10. When answering questions which you are not able to express in an essay format,draw a Venn diagram, a map, a list, or write down everything you know about the topic. Then try to put the answer together. Getting as much information down, will assist the teacher in understanding what you know about the topic.

Most importantly, understand what the teacher wants you to give back. In some classes you reiterate the facts; in others you give your opinion; you need to know the expectations and the format of the exam you will be taking. Ask for a study guide or some help. School is not a punishment. School is a place where you ask questions to learn. Once you establish the testing agenda you can feel confident that the notes you take will help you score well
